In the beginning was the grandfather, who always worked with horses. Also in the first world war he was with the horse-drawn vehicle in the employment. grandfather

My father grew up with his brother in the countryside. When both parents died, however, the two boys had to move to Vienna. My father was also here in the city, the love of the horse. So he decided to become a carter.

When the Second World War came, he was drafted as a coachman for the food supply.

He worked for a long time as a coachman at the brewery. But here too they switched to trucks.

For some years he was still able to work with the Schönbrunner nurseries with the last horse-drawn teams until the smaller, faster tractors were delivered.

Mr. Trampusch sen. was not a complainer, but was looking for another job.

During the construction of the Viennese high-water pipeline, he worked in various locations throughout Austria. But the family did not see him very often.

When the water supply for Vienna was completed, he took all his possessions and rented one of the few Fiaker concessions and a second existing, was then bought, as was customary at the time.
When finally his own stable was found he visibly revived and enjoyed his professional dream.

The takeover:
So I was a city child, but was allowed to spend a lot of time in the stable. On special occasions (removals, events …) I was allowed to sit with my father together on the coachman. He told me about his experiences, experiences and I got to know a few die-hard horse people.

It was clear to me quite early that I too would become a Viennese Fiaker. Before that, however, I had to complete a cooking apprenticeship. But then it finally started.

But I was not allowed to start in my own company. But that’s how you learn a lot more. Over this time I could write a novel of incidents, experiences and events, well maybe I’ll take the pen. When my father then went to his well-deserved pension, I took over the Fiakerbetrieb.

I had very good teachers who told me their experiences or showed about: horse knowledge, carriage and restoration, horse harness u. Tension, driving instruction (completion of the bronze driving license), customer orientation + marketing and much more. Here I would like to thank all of whom I was able to learn and will pass it on to interested people.

After years of collecting in various places, I have also come to a few rarities in the hands: such. old original lanterns, carriage door handles and gigs, parts of old harnesses, original buckles, old whip boots u.v.m. Thanks to various books and templates, I was able to repair and imitate some of these beautiful originals. Important to me in these old pieces but also the meaning behind it. Why was the breastplate driven in Vienna and the harness with lace harness in Vienna? Why is the coachman sitting on the right side of the box? And you always learn something new.

It is nice to be able to make your hobby a profession, but you must not forget that the responsibility for the horses 24 hours – 7 days a week.

The horses are fed, cleaned, the carriages are prepared and clamped.

While the teams are all going into the city, the stable is being cleaned, the horses that are at home are taken alternately to the exit, or the blacksmith comes; alternately fodder, hay and straw are brought, that is to load and unload the truck, no matter how hot it is – not only the oats stand out here.

Then there would be the maintenance and care such as: washing carriages, charging the coach batteries, the lubrication of the Reibkranzes, lanterns and chrome parts polish, grease and polish up wallpapering and roof leather blacken and grease (which is also necessary in the harness, because the leather otherwise becomes brittle and could tear), horses bathe …

At lunchtime, the horses get another feed ration and it is cleared again.

Now a little rest, unless it is a new horse trained, or there are extra work such as: Stall coloring, change the wheel in a carriage, the veterinarian comes vaccinate, drive an ordered ride in the afternoon, paint the new coach wheels,. ..

For a few years I was also a Fiaxspeaker, there were still meetings with the authorities, but my limited time as well as the realization that unfortunately many things went in the wrong direction, forced me to give up this voluntary windmill post.
